The wait is officially over. As of July 29, 2026, Project Zomboid Build 42 has moved to the stable branch. This marks the most ambitious technical and content update in the game’s decade-long history. With entirely new survival mechanics, a massive map expansion, and revolutionary building systems, Knox Country will never be the same.
But with these massive additions comes a significant shift in how multiplayer servers handle the load. Here is a breakdown of what is new in Build 42, and how AleForge is updating our hosting plans and server locations to ensure your community survives the apocalypse without a hitch.
What’s New in Build 42?
Build 42 fundamentally changes the late-game experience, focusing on giving players the ability to truly rebuild society once the initial loot runs dry.
- Animals and Husbandry: For the first time, Knox Country is alive with animals. Players can hunt wild game like deer and rabbits, or raise domestic livestock including cows, chickens, pigs, and sheep for a renewable source of meat, milk, eggs, leather, and wool.
- A Complete Crafting Overhaul: The crafting system has been reimagined with tiered workstations. You can now specialize in new professions like blacksmithing, metal forging, stone working, pottery, and brewing.
- Basements and Skyscrapers: The building engine has been entirely revamped. The height limit has been increased from 7 to an incredible 32 floors. On the flip side, you can now construct and explore procedural underground basements and bunkers, complete with a brand-new, realistic lighting propagation system.
- Massive Map Expansion: The surface area of the map has doubled, introducing 1,400 unique buildings and 20,000 new tiles to explore.
Why Build 42 Demands More Server Power
Running a multiplayer server in B41 was relatively straightforward, but in B42, the rules have changed.
The server engine now has to calculate complex animal AI pathing, advanced lighting optimizations deep underground, and the physics of zombies falling from 32-story skyscrapers. Furthermore, Project Zomboid relies heavily on Java garbage collection; as the world expands and memory fills up, a lack of RAM can cause the server thread to freeze, resulting in “teleporting zombies”—a literal death sentence for your players.
Our New Minimum Recommendation: 8 GB of RAM
To accommodate the massive chunk boundaries and new backend systems, the old 4 GB RAM recommendation is no longer sufficient. To ensure a smooth, lag-free survival experience for your community, AleForge now recommends a minimum of 8 GB of RAM for Build 42 servers.
New Server Locations & The AleForge Budget Tier
We know that doubling your server’s RAM requirements can be daunting. To help everyone secure these extra resources affordably and play with the lowest ping possible, we are officially launching our Budget Tier for Project Zomboid alongside new server location support!
- Unbeatable Pricing: Our Budget Tier is priced at just $1 per GB of RAM.
- New Location — London: We are excited to announce a brand new location in London, which is available immediately for both Budget and Premium servers!
- Oregon Updates: Players on the West Coast can rejoice, as our existing Oregon data center now fully supports the new Budget Tier.
This makes securing our recommended 8 GB of memory highly affordable, ensuring your community can experience B42 smoothly without breaking the bank, regardless of where they are playing from.
