Minecraft Live September 2026 Recap: The Sift, Dungeons II, Ice Caves and What It Means for Server Owners

Minecraft Live 2026 took place on September 26, and Mojang used it to announce the biggest change to the game’s world in years: The Sift, a brand new dimension and the first one added to Minecraft in over 14 years.

This recap covers everything that was announced, what is confirmed and what is not, and what server owners should do to get ready.

The Sift: Minecraft’s New Dimension

The Sift will join the Overworld, the Nether and the End as the game’s fourth dimension. Mojang describes it as “beautiful, vibrant, and teeming with souls.” From the footage shown, it has a very different look from the other dimensions, with pinkish blocks and blue-green vegetation.

Mojang has confirmed two areas so far:

• The Meadow
• The Carapace

Mojang has not shared details about how these areas work, what blocks and resources they contain, or how players will travel there in Java and Bedrock. The broadcast showed a short look at the dimension and one of the mobs that lives there. Anything beyond that is still unannounced.

When Can You Play It?

The Sift appears in Dungeons II first, so it is a separate experience from the Java and Bedrock version. The Dungeons II version is a preview of the look and the mobs, not a copy of how the dimension will work in the main game.

Minecraft Dungeons 2 Release Date: September 29, 2026

Minecraft Dungeons II is the sequel to the action dungeon-crawler spin-off. Based on what Mojang showed:

• An interconnected world. The first game used separate, level-based missions. The sequel is set in one connected world.
• Jumping. Players can jump in Dungeons II, which the first game did not have.
• The Illager High Council. Even though the Arch-Illager and the Orb of Dominance were defeated in the first game, the world is out of balance again, and angry illagers have formed a new leadership group called the Illager High Council.
• Rifts to the Sift. Rifts appear throughout the world. Step into one and you are taken to the Sift, where you fight new mobs and find loot.

Dungeons II is a separate game from Java and Bedrock. It does not change anything for Minecraft servers.

The Next Game Drop: Ice Caves

Mojang showed the first look at the next game drop, which adds a new cave biome: ice caves. They join dripstone caves, lush caves and sulfur caves as a cave type to explore.

What was shown:

• Ice and calcite. The caves are freezing and filled with ice and calcite blocks.
• Icicles. New icicles grow naturally from the ceiling.
• Ice crystals. New ice crystals grow on the ground and give off a soft light.
• A new frozen zombie variant. It does not have an official name yet. Its hits deal damage and apply a freezing effect, and some of them throw ice balls.

Mojang has not announced a release date for this drop.

Other Announcements

• Nintendo Switch 2 version. A dedicated Minecraft version for Nintendo Switch 2 launches on October 27, 2026, with improved performance and visuals. Mojang first announced this date earlier, and repeated it during the show.
• Creator Platform. Mojang is working on tools and systems to make it easier to create, manage and share Minecraft content, with the goal of getting more players to become creators. No launch date or full feature list was given.
• Minecraft World, London 2027. Built with Merlin Entertainments, Minecraft World opens in 2027 at Chessington World of Adventures Resort. It includes the world’s first Minecraft hotel, with themed rooms and a deep-sea diner, and Escape the Nether, the first Minecraft rollercoaster, which runs both indoors and outdoors.
• Sound Effects Packs. New sound effects packs are coming to the Minecraft Marketplace.
• Minecraft Education turns 10. The show also celebrated Minecraft Education’s 10th birthday.

What This Means for Minecraft Server Owners

The short answer: you do not need to change anything today. Dungeons II does not touch Java or Bedrock servers, and the Sift and the ice caves have no release date yet. There is still plenty you can do to be ready.

What to expect

• A new dimension will likely add more world data and more chunk generation. The Nether and the End are each stored as their own part of the world. A fourth dimension will most likely need more disk space, and more work from the server when players explore it. If the server starts to struggle, check the common causes of Minecraft server lag. Mojang has not confirmed any performance details yet, so treat this as something to watch, not a certainty.
• Plugins and mods may need updates. After a big Minecraft update, server software (Paper, Fabric, NeoForge, Forge), plugins and mods usually need time to catch up. Do not upgrade a live server on release day without testing first. When you are ready, change your Minecraft server version from the panel.
• New terrain only appears in new chunks. When a game drop adds a new cave biome like ice caves, areas of your world that were already generated will not change. Players will find the new caves in chunks that have not been explored yet, or in a fresh world. After the drop is installed, you can pre-generate chunks so players are not generating that new terrain live.
