What is Geyser?
How to Let Bedrock Players Join Your Java Server With GeyserMC
Section titled “How to Let Bedrock Players Join Your Java Server With GeyserMC”Minecraft is split into two main editions: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition.
- Java Edition was created first and is only available on PCs.
- Bedrock Edition was built from the ground up to work on consoles, Windows 10/11, and mobile phones.
Typically, Java Edition players and Bedrock Edition players cannot play with each other. This is a problem GeyserMC aims to solve. This guide explains what Geyser and Floodgate are, and how to install them on your server.
What Is GeyserMC?
Section titled “What Is GeyserMC?”GeyserMC is a Minecraft mod and plugin that allows Bedrock Edition players to connect to a Java Edition server. It acts as a translator: it takes the data from Bedrock and translates it into data that the Java Edition server can understand.
What Is Floodgate?
Section titled “What Is Floodgate?”You will see Floodgate come up in many conversations about Geyser.
By default, Geyser uses Mojang’s authentication servers to make sure the player is legitimate. The drawback of this method is that players must own both Bedrock Edition and Java Edition.
Floodgate is Geyser’s authentication method. It lets players join without owning a copy of Java Edition.
| Geyser only | Geyser with Floodgate | |
|---|---|---|
| Player needs Bedrock Edition | Yes | Yes |
| Player needs Java Edition | Yes | No |
| Best for | Players who own both editions | Mixed groups, including console and mobile players |
How Do I Install Geyser?
Section titled “How Do I Install Geyser?”Before You Begin
Section titled “Before You Begin”- A Java server that supports plugins, such as Paper or Spigot. Vanilla servers can’t run plugins.
- An extra UDP port for Bedrock connections. The default is
19132. - The Geyser and Floodgate files, downloaded from the GeyserMC website.
Tip: Make sure the files you download match your server software. For Paper or Spigot, choose the Spigot versions.
Installation Steps
Section titled “Installation Steps”-
Go to the AleForge Panel and select your Minecraft server.
-
Stop the server.
-
Open File Manager and go to the
pluginsfolder. -
Upload the Geyser plugin file. If you want players to join without Java Edition, upload the Floodgate plugin file too.
-
Start the server once so the plugins create their configuration files, then stop it again.
-
Open the Geyser configuration file and check these settings:
bedrock:address: 0.0.0.0port: 19132 # your Bedrock UDP portremote:address: 127.0.0.1port: 25565 # your Java server portauth-type: floodgate -
Save the file and start the server.
-
Check the Console for a message showing Geyser has started.
The ports above are examples. Use the Java port and the extra UDP port that belong to your own server. If you aren’t using Floodgate, set
auth-typeback toonline.
How Do Bedrock Players Connect?
Section titled “How Do Bedrock Players Connect?”- Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition and go to the server list.
- Add a new server with any name.
- Enter your server IP as the address.
- Enter the Geyser port (for example,
19132) as the port. This is not the Java port. - Save, then select the server to join.
Console players: Consoles can’t add a server by IP address directly, so they need a workaround to reach the server. See our guide on how console players can join Minecraft servers.
With Floodgate, Bedrock players get a dot (.) in front of their username by default. This stops their names from clashing with Java usernames.
Things to Know
Section titled “Things to Know”- Bedrock players cannot use Java mods.
- Some plugins that rely on Java-specific behavior may act oddly for Bedrock players.
- Keep Geyser and Floodgate up to date, and make sure they match your server version.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| “Unable to connect to world” | The UDP port may be blocked or not allocated. Check that the Bedrock port is open and correct. |
| Bedrock players are asked to log in | Floodgate may be missing, or auth-type isn’t set to floodgate. |
| Players can’t connect at all | Check that Geyser is installed, matches your server software, and that players use the Geyser port instead of the Java port. |
| Java players can’t join | Check that the Java server port is unchanged and the server is running without errors. |
