How to Pre-Generate your Minecraft World

Pre-generating your Minecraft world is a fantastic way to improve the performance of your server. Instead of generating new terrain on the fly as players explore, which is one of the more demanding things a server does, you generate the terrain ahead of time, so it’s already sitting there ready to load when players reach it. Here’s how to do it on your Minecraft server, using a plugin/mod called Chunky.

  1. Download Chunky for your server’s version and flavor of Minecraft, for example 1.21.8 Fabric. Make sure you grab the correct build, since Chunky is available for Fabric, Forge, and Paper/Spigot, and a mismatched version won’t load.

  2. Open the AleForge Panel.

  3. Make sure your server is stopped.

  4. In Versions, make sure your server is set to the same mod loader as the Chunky build you downloaded.

  5. Go to the Files tab.

  6. Upload Chunky to your mods or plugins folder, whichever your server uses. If you don’t see one, create it with the Create Directory button.

  7. Go back to the Console page and start your server.

  8. Make sure you’re opped, by running the following command in the console:

    op <username>
  9. Open Minecraft and connect to your server.

  10. In-game, run the following commands:

    /chunky radius 1000
    /chunky start

This tells Chunky to generate a 1000-block radius around your world’s spawn point. Chunky will begin generating chunks in the background, and you’ll see progress updates in the console as it works.

  • Pick a radius that fits your needs. 1000 blocks is a reasonable starting point for a small to medium server, but you can set it higher or lower depending on how large you expect your world to need to be. Keep in mind that larger radiuses take longer to generate and use more disk space.
  • This can take a while. Depending on the radius you choose and your server’s resources, pre-generation can take anywhere from several minutes to multiple hours. You can keep playing while it runs in the background, though performance may be reduced until it finishes.
  • Check progress anytime by running /chunky continue after a restart if generation gets interrupted, or /chunky cancel if you want to stop it early.
  • Centering on a different point. By default, Chunky generates around your world’s spawn point. If you want to pre-generate around a different location instead, use /chunky center <x> <z> before running /chunky start.
