How to Disable the Nether on Paper (1.21.9, 1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.3)

This guide shows you how to fully turn off the Nether dimension on a Paper server running Minecraft 1.21.10.

Important: The Setting Has Moved

In older versions, you disabled the Nether with allow-nether=false in server.properties. Mojang removed that setting in Minecraft 1.21.9. Because of this, on 1.21.10 you must use the Paper config file instead: config/paper-global.yml.

If your server was updated from an older version, Paper automatically moves your old allow-nether value into the new file.

Steps: Disable the Nether

Stop your server from the Pterodactyl panel.
Open the File Manager.
Open the config folder.
Open the file paper-global.yml.
Find the misc: section and the enable-nether line:

Change true to false:

  enable-nether: false

Click Save Content.
Start your server.

The Nether dimension will no longer be enabled or loaded.

Tip: If you don’t see the config folder or paper-global.yml, start the server once and let it finish loading. Paper creates these files on the first run. Then stop the server and follow the steps again.

Steps: Enable the Nether Again

Do the same steps, but set the value back to true:

  enable-nether: true

Save the file and restart the server.

Only Want to Block Portals?

enable-nether: false turns off the whole dimension. If you only want to stop players from entering the Nether through portals, you can use the game rule instead. This keeps the Nether dimension loaded, so plugins and commands can still use it.

On 1.21.10, run this in the console or in game:

/gamerule allowEnteringNetherUsingPortals false

To allow portals again, use true. Game rule names were changed in newer versions (1.21.11 and up), so use tab-complete to find the exact name on your version.

Things to Know Before You Disable It

Make a backup first. Copy your world folders before changing dimension settings.
Restart the server. The setting is read when the server starts, so /reload is not enough.
Your Nether world data is not deleted. The files stay in your world folder. If you set enable-nether back to true, the Nether comes back with everything in it.
Move players out first. Ask players to leave the Nether before you disable it, so nobody is left in a dimension that is no longer loaded.
Check your plugins. Plugins that use the Nether, such as multi-world, warp or teleport plugins, may show errors. Remove or update those plugins if you see problems.
Nether-only content is unavailable. Things like netherite and other Nether resources cannot be obtained in survival while the Nether is disabled.

Troubleshooting

Problem	What to try
I can’t find `allow-nether` in `server.properties`	This is normal on 1.21.9 and newer. Use `enable-nether` in `config/paper-global.yml`.
The Nether is still working	Make sure you saved the file, that `enable-nether` is under `misc:`, and that you restarted the server.
The server won’t start after I edited the file	The YAML spacing is probably wrong. Use spaces, not tabs, and keep `enable-nether` indented under `misc:`.
Players are still using portals	Check for a plugin that changes portals, and check the `allowEnteringNetherUsingPortals` game rule.
