Mods Vs Plugins Vs Datapacks

Mods, plugins, and datapacks may seem very similar to each other, since they all add features to Minecraft. The way each one works is quite different, though. This guide explains the core differences so you can choose the right one for your server.

Note: This guide is about Java Edition. Bedrock Edition uses a different system for add-ons.

Mods Plugins Datapacks
Installation Must be installed on both the client and the server Only needs to be installed on the server Only needs to be installed on the server world
Frameworks Forge, Fabric Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, etc. Any version of Minecraft supported by the datapack
Players need to install anything? Yes Typically no No
Best for Big new content such as machines and magic Server features such as protection and economy Small tweaks that stay close to vanilla

Mods are modifications to Minecraft that use a mod loader, such as Forge or Fabric, to access the game’s files. They typically modify, add, and change blocks, items, and the user interface. This lets them add exciting new features such as machines, magic, or whatever the mod author wishes to add.

A few examples of mods are Botania, Create, and Industrial Foregoing.

The key difference between a mod and a plugin or datapack is that both the client and the server need the mod installed in order for the client to connect.

There is one exception. Some mods are client-side only, and these can actually prevent the server from starting if you put them on the server. These are typically mods that only offer user interface or performance improvements, such as OptiFine or MouseTweaks. Players install them on their own game only.

A plugin uses a special version of the Minecraft server, such as Bukkit, Spigot, or Paper, to load its features.

The key difference between a plugin and a mod is that the client connecting to the server typically does not need to install anything special for a plugin to work.

Plugins commonly add features such as:

  • Chest protection
  • Economy systems
  • Anti-grief protection
  • Anti-cheat protection

A datapack is a modification or add-on that uses Minecraft’s own built-in framework for add-ons. Datapacks do not require any special version of Minecraft on your server.

What is nice about datapacks is that you only need to drop them into the datapacks folder of your world for them to work.

Datapacks may:

  • Change world generation
  • Add blocks or items
  • Add different features to the game

They are also typically compatible with many versions of Minecraft. An example of a datapack is Vanilla Tweaks.

  • Want big new content such as machines, magic, or new dimensions? Use mods. Every player will need to install them.
  • Want server features such as protection, economy, or anti-cheat, without players installing anything? Use plugins.
  • Want small tweaks that stay close to vanilla and work on a normal server? Use datapacks.

Tip: Mods and plugins generally don’t mix on the same server, since they need different server software. Pick the type that fits your server before you start installing.
