Which Minecraft Server Plan Should I Get?
A common question we get is how many players, plugins, and mods a single server can handle. There is no easy answer, because thousands of variables can affect a server’s performance. However, there are some general rules that can help you decide which server package suits your needs best.
1. The Basics: RAM (Memory)
Section titled “1. The Basics: RAM (Memory)”Every Minecraft server has an amount of RAM allocated to it, and this affects almost every aspect of your server’s performance. The general rule is that the more RAM you have, the more players, plugins, and mods you can run.
2. Player Slots
Section titled “2. Player Slots”The number of players your server can handle depends on how much RAM you have. As a rule of thumb, plan for about 50 MB of RAM per player. This can go up if you have plugins that interact directly with players.
3. Plugins
Section titled “3. Plugins”A good rule of thumb is about 50 MB of RAM per plugin. Some bigger plugins may use more, such as multi-world, logging, or map plugins.
4. Mods and Modpacks
Section titled “4. Mods and Modpacks”There are so many modpacks out there that we recommend opening a ticket. Tell us which pack you plan to run and how many players you expect, and we will help you choose the right plan.
Quick Reference
Section titled “Quick Reference”| Item | Estimated RAM |
|---|---|
| Each player | About 50 MB |
| Each plugin | About 50 MB (more for large plugins such as multi-world, logging, or map plugins) |
| Mods and modpacks | Varies. Open a ticket and we will help you choose. |
Example
Section titled “Example”You want to run a server that can handle 10 players and 10 plugins. Following the rules above:
10 players x 50 MB = 500 MB RAM10 plugins x 50 MB = 500 MB RAM
500 MB + 500 MB = 1 GB of RAMThat gives about 1 GB of RAM for a server with 10 players and 10 plugins.
Note: These figures cover players and plugins only. The server software itself also needs memory to run, so leave extra headroom. We recommend a minimum of 2 GB of RAM, even for a small server with friends.
Remember: These Are Estimates
Section titled “Remember: These Are Estimates”All of these numbers are estimates. Nothing with Minecraft servers is set in stone, and even slight differences between Minecraft versions can affect all of the recommendations above.
