How to change the random tick speed in Minecraft

Random tick speed controls how often blocks are randomly updated in the world. It affects things like crop and sapling growth, grass spreading, and leaf decay. You can change it with a game rule command. This guide shows you how, including the new command name used in recent versions.

You can run the command in the Console of the AleForge Panel, or in-game as an opped player. The command depends on your Minecraft version.

Minecraft 1.21.11 and Newer (New Command Name)

Section titled “Minecraft 1.21.11 and Newer (New Command Name)”

Minecraft 1.21.11 renamed its game rules, so the random tick speed rule has a new name:

/gamerule minecraft:random_tick_speed <tickspeed>
/gamerule randomTickSpeed <tickspeed>

Replace <tickspeed> with the number you want, without the < and > symbols. For example:

/gamerule randomTickSpeed 10

Using the Console: In the AleForge Panel Console, you can leave out the starting /. For example, type gamerule randomTickSpeed 10.

Not sure which one to use? Type /gamerule and press Tab to see the exact rule names available on your server.

The default random tick speed is 3 on Java Edition. On Bedrock Edition, the default is 1.

To see the current value, run the command without a number:

/gamerule randomTickSpeed

On 1.21.11 and newer, use /gamerule minecraft:random_tick_speed.

Value What it does
0 Turns random ticks off. Crops, saplings, and similar blocks stop growing.
3 The Java Edition default.
Higher numbers Blocks update more often, so crops and plants grow faster.

Changing the random tick speed to a higher value may increase the load on your server and may cause lag. Raise it in small steps and watch how your server performs. Very high values can also have side effects, such as fire spreading much faster, so it’s a good idea to back up your world first.

To return to the default value on Java Edition, run:

/gamerule randomTickSpeed 3

On 1.21.11 and newer, use /gamerule minecraft:random_tick_speed 3. On Bedrock Edition, set it to 1.

Problem What to try
“Unknown or incomplete command” or “Incorrect argument” You may be using the wrong rule name for your version. Try the new name on 1.21.11 and newer, or the old name on older versions.
The command doesn’t work in-game You must be an operator. See our guide on how to set and remove OP.
Crops still grow slowly Check the current value with the command above, and make sure it was set in the right world or server.
The server lags after raising the value Lower the number, or set it back to the default.
