How to Opt In to Experimental Branches on Your 7 Days to Die Server
The experimental branch ships newer builds before they hit stable. Useful for testing, but expect breakage — especially with mods.
Switch the server branch
Section titled “Switch the server branch”- Open the AleForge Panel
- Stop the server
- Create a backup from
Backups - Go to
Startup - Set
Steam Beta Branchtolatest_experimental - Open
Settings→Reinstall Serverand confirm - Start the server once installation finishes
To return to stable, clear Steam Beta Branch (leave it empty), reinstall again, and restart.
Reinstalling overwrites default game files from Steam. Back up your world and Mods folder first. Saves in .local/share/7DaysToDie/ are not deleted by reinstall, but always keep a backup before branch swaps.
Match your game client
Section titled “Match your game client”On Steam (PC):
- Right-click 7 Days to Die →
Properties→Betas - Select
latest_experimentalfrom the dropdown - Let Steam update the game
Server and client must be on the same branch or joins will fail.
Mods on experimental
Section titled “Mods on experimental”Most mod packs target stable. Check each mod’s page for experimental support before switching branches.
After any branch change, see Update your server and Troubleshooting if players cannot connect.
