How to Upload a World to Minecraft Bedrock Edition

How to Upload a World to Your Minecraft Bedrock Server

Section titled “How to Upload a World to Your Minecraft Bedrock Server”

Want to play your existing world with your friends? This guide shows you how to get a Bedrock world onto your computer, prepare it, and upload it to your server.

  1. Get your world onto your computer (from the game, Realms, your saves folder, or an online download).
  2. Prepare it (convert a .mcworld file to a .zip and extract it, if needed).
  3. Upload it to your server and set the world name.
  • A Bedrock world you want to use
  • An SFTP client such as FileZilla or WinSCP
  • A decompression tool such as 7-Zip or WinRAR (only needed for downloaded worlds)

Tip: Keep a copy of your original world somewhere safe before you start, in case something goes wrong.

Pick the method that matches where your world is stored.

  1. Open Minecraft and click Play. You will see a list of your singleplayer worlds.
  2. On the right side of the world you want to download, click the edit icon.
  3. Scroll down, find Export World, and click it.
  4. Save your world into a known directory on your computer.
  1. Open Minecraft and click Play.
  2. Your Realms will load. Click the Edit icon.
  3. Find your latest world save on the right and click the download icon.
  4. Go back to the Play tab. The world will appear freshly imported at the top.
  5. Click the edit icon on the world, scroll down to Export World, and choose a known directory to save it in.

You can also copy a world straight from your computer’s files.

  1. Open File Explorer.

  2. Paste this path into the address bar at the top, replacing <username> with your computer username:

    C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\minecraftWorlds\
  3. This opens your saves folder for Bedrock Edition. Find your save and drag the folder to your desktop or another known directory.

  4. Rename the world folder so you can identify it when uploading. It’s best to avoid spaces and special characters.

  1. Create a folder in a known directory on your computer and give it an easy-to-remember name.
  2. Download your world from a trusted site such as Planet Minecraft. Double-check that the world is made for Bedrock Edition, not Java Edition.
  3. Download the world to your computer.
  4. The world may be saved as a .mcworld file. If so, convert it to a .zip file first.
  5. Once converted, extract the files from the zip into the folder you created, using a tool such as 7-Zip or WinRAR.

If your world is a .mcworld file, you need to turn it into a .zip so you can extract it.

  1. In File Explorer, click the View tab at the top left and tick the File name extensions checkbox.
  2. Right-click your file, select Rename, change .mcworld to .zip, and press Enter.
  3. Your world is now a zip archive. Extract it into a folder using a decompression tool.
  1. Stop your server.
  2. Connect to your server files with an SFTP client such as FileZilla or WinSCP.
  3. On your computer, find the world folder you want to upload.
  4. Drag it into the /worlds folder on the server.
  5. Wait for the upload to finish completely. Check that no files fail to transfer.
  1. Open server.properties on the server.

  2. Change level-name to the name of your uploaded world folder:

    level-name=MyWorld
  3. Save the file and start your server.

The name above is an example only. Use the exact name of the world folder you uploaded.

Problem What to try
Server creates a new world Check that level-name matches the folder name in /worlds exactly, then restart.
Some files failed to upload Upload the world again and check that every file transfers.
Can’t convert the .mcworld file Turn on File name extensions first, so you rename the extension and not just the file name.
The world is for Java Edition Java worlds don’t work on Bedrock servers. Download a Bedrock version instead.
World name has spaces or special characters Rename the folder using only letters and numbers, and update level-name to match.
