How do I Create a Custom Vintage Story World

With Vintage Story, creating a custom world is often easier on your computer and then uploading it to the server than recreating every option by hand. Server [WORLD] Startup settings only apply when generating a new world on the server — an uploaded save keeps the settings it was created with.

  1. Open Vintage Story
  2. Click Single Player
  3. Select Create New World
  4. Choose a Preset or Customize the World
  5. Choose Create World
  6. Exit Vintage Story after the world is created
  7. Open File Explorer on Windows
  8. Enter %appdata%\VintagestoryData\Saves in the navigation bar and press Enter
  9. Open the Blacksmith’s Portal, stop your server, then upload your .vcdbs file to data/Saves under Files
  10. Open Filesdata/serverconfig.json and find SaveFileLocation
  11. Update it to your uploaded world, for example ./data/Saves/my custom world.vcdbs

You can also rename your world file to default.vcdbs and leave SaveFileLocation unchanged if that is what your config already uses.

  1. Save your changes
  2. Start your server to load the uploaded world
  • Do not rely on [WORLD] Startup fields to reshape an uploaded save — those apply only on new world creation
  • Runtime [ADMIN] Startup settings (name, password, public listing, whitelist mode, and similar) still apply every start
  • Make a backup before replacing an existing world
