What Version of Java do I need for My Version of Minecraft?
Which Java Version Does My Minecraft Server Need?
Section titled “Which Java Version Does My Minecraft Server Need?”Different versions of Minecraft typically need different versions of Java, because Mojang has updated Minecraft’s Java requirements over the years. This guide explains which Java version goes with which Minecraft version, and what that means for your AleForge server.
Short Answer
Section titled “Short Answer”At AleForge, we ship our servers with a custom Java install that allows Java 21 to be used on all versions. In most cases, you do not need to worry about Java versions for your Minecraft server.
We also offer specific Java versions for modpacks and plugins that rely on the functionality of older editions of Java.
Java Versions for Each Minecraft Version
Section titled “Java Versions for Each Minecraft Version”| Minecraft Version | Java Version |

When Do I Need to Think About Java Versions?
Section titled “When Do I Need to Think About Java Versions?”You usually don’t. Java 21 works across all Minecraft versions on AleForge. The main exception is older modpacks and plugins that depend on features specific to older versions of Java.
You may need a specific Java version if:
- You are running an older modpack that was built for Java 8 or another older version.
- A plugin or mod you use tells you it requires a specific Java version.
- Your server fails to start with a Java-related error in the Console.
What To Do If You Need a Different Java Version
Section titled “What To Do If You Need a Different Java Version”- Check the modpack or plugin’s page to see which Java version it needs.
- Look for the matching Java version in your server’s settings in the AleForge Panel.
- If you can’t find the version you need, contact AleForge support and tell them your Minecraft version and the Java version you need.
Troubleshooting
Section titled “Troubleshooting”| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Server won’t start and mentions Java | Check the Console for the error, then compare your Minecraft version with the table above. |
| Old modpack crashes on startup | The modpack may need an older Java version, such as Java 8. Check the modpack’s page. |
| Plugin or mod says it needs a different Java version | Follow the steps above to switch to the version it asks for. |
